Are Rescues Necessary?
|
Throughout the centuries, dating back 4000
years to the ancient Egyptians, parrots (Psittacidae) have been highly
prized as pets. The desire for these birds has continued through the
present day. A reasonable question might be…Are organizations like
Parrot Valley Rescue necessary? Some would argue that these spectacular
tropical birds should never have been taken from their rain forest/savanna
homes in the first place. I think all of us at Parrot Valley Rescue
whole-heartedly agree. In fact, international treaties now protect
migratory birds and endangered and threatened species and these wild
caught birds can no longer be taken from their tropical homes, but the
demand has continued to grow. Thousands of captive reared birds are
purchased each year from pet stores and reputable breeders with the best
intentions, however many will be surrendered, abandoned, mistreated,
malnourished or ignored. These are the birds that make Parrot
Valley Rescue a vital and necessary organization.
Bring the gift of love, color and excitement into your home. Adopt a bird!
